Imagine yourself standing in line at Best Buy to buy new laptop. As you stand there you feel yourself in the "outer body experience" of joy and wonder. You've been scrimping and saving for 5 months! You are actually holding the brand new unopened box in your hands! You can't wait to take it home, boot it up, and play with it. Your thoughts of bliss screech are interrupted by the teenage cashier who mindlessly asks "Do you want to the protection plan for this laptop? It's 9." One Hundred Ninety Nine Dollars! That's like 35% of the total 9 cost! Wow. Is that worth it? I've been asked these questions over and over for the past 10 years. Ah - the protection plan. Every major big box seller has one. Best Buy, Fry's, Staples, Radio Shack, on and on. Always when you're in the middle of the purchase some type of sales person interjects one reason or another to buy their plan. Is it worth it?

Bottom line: I would stay away from any type of protection plan. I've never bought a plan for any laptop I've ever bought. In my opinion I've found that it's never worth the money. 5 years ago on Black Friday 2005 I bought a Toshiba laptop for 0 without a protection plan. 5 years later that machine is still kicking (the battery only lasts 30 minutes!). I never needed the plan. I'm glad I never bought one!

I just did some quick "Google Research" and discovered the same things I've always suspected:

1. Electronic stores make more money off the extended service plans than any other product. Most people aren't aware that stores only make 10% profit off electronics like laptops and desktops. They have to make up for that loss by offering protection plans and overpriced accessories! Come on, Best Buy charges for a USB cable? You can get one for at Walmart or at eBay!

2. Protection plans are often outsourced to companies with very poor customer service. I've read that Best Buy is NOTORIOUS for not backing up the terms of their protection plan, and making it extremely difficult to even get the work done. Not worth it.

3. You have to wait 6 weeks or more for the defective hardware to be replaced. Waiting that long is not worth saving 0 or 0! You don't want to get waiting on poor customer service! Forget that!

4. You often pay for something you never need. Why pay for a service you probably will never need? It just seems like throwing good money after bad! Put your money toward good use!

5. You're betting the odds that you laptop will fail within 2 or 3 years of purchase. My experience has taught me that they usually last 4 to 7 years before failing. Ever heard of Self Fulfilling Prophecy? Since you're even slightly believing that you system could fail odds are higher that it will actually fail! Bad vibes.

Bottom line is that protection plans are not worth the money you'd spend. Save that 9 for your next laptop (in 2013) and be happy.

Royal Doulton Pretty Ladies HN1-100

This was Royal Doulton's first line of figurines and was sometimes also referred to as the 'Fair Ladies'. Where possible, I have listed the name of the figurine, the model number, the designers name and the production year. Please bare in mind that these pretty ladies are some of the rarest, hard to find royal doulton ladies you will ever come across and if you are lucky enough to actually find one of these models in an auction or jumble sale somewhere, then by gosh you should bid/buy/haggle do whatever it takes to get hold of it because these extremely rare collectable royal doulton figurines do not come up very often!

The other option for finding these rare ceramic figurines is of course, auction house but many of these hard to find, royal doulton figurines will not be available at auctions because they are indeed so rare. Do not be discouraged from trying though, and if you familiarise yourself with these and the later editions, auction houses usually reveal valuable alternative models too. You can find online royal doulton auctions at the likes of eBay where auction listings are updated hourly so they could change at any time which means if you don't see a treasure straight away, try again later. But it's always best (and cheaper) to try and find them 'offline' in car boot sales or jumble sales or even chairty shops.

If you are an avid collector of horror merchandise, then there are many websites on the Internet where you can find a generous treasure trove of such items.

You might be seeking a rare old horror movie poster, such as those of the Universal or Hammer movies. For example, an original Dracula one sheet poster (27×41-inches) style F featuring a colorful illustration of Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye aboard a doomed cargo ship sold in 2009 for 0,700 (Heritage Auction Galleries). Only three examples of this super rare poster have surfaced to date. Or, if you are a horror bookworm, then you might be searching for that ever-elusive creepy paperback that is now out of print. For example, the original New English Library editions of the Robert Lory Dracula series, which enjoyed great popularity back in the 1970's, are still much sought after, and being one of the people who missed these books first time round, I was both thrilled and extremely lucky to finally track down a seller on eBay who still had these Lory Dracula books available! And in very good condition they are too, I am pleased to say, considering just how old these paperbacks are.

Original autographs of the top horror actors (e.g. Karloff, Lugosi) are also much sought after items, and many of these rare signed photos have occasionally been tracked down both on eBay and also on various horror movie memorabilia sites. Horror figurines - like the classic Aurora glow-in-the-dark monster kits - are also a very popular commodity with collectors, and it is good to see that even though those much-loved Aurora self-assembly figures are now phased out, there are many new and exiting types of horror figures that have been launched on to the market, enabling the horror buff to add not only Frankenstein, Wolf Man and Dracula to their collection, but also the more modern-day monsters like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger!

Old horror magazines are also greatly sought after by collectors. For example, the 1950's EC comics, Tales From The Crypt and Vault of Horror, still exchange hands for quite considerable amounts of money. Moving on to the seventies, glossy colour horror magazines like Monster Mag - which often folded out into a gorgeous big poster of a Hammer film - can sometimes be discovered on eBay and horror merchandise sites. But when buying old horror movie posters, collectors should always bear this in mind: fake posters have surfaced in recent years, and the list includes some Universal Pictures horror movie titles.
